In Memoriam: Richard E. Dean, MD

The Michigan State University Department of Surgery is saddened to share the passing of Richard E. Dean, MD, former chair of the Department of Surgery, who passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 91.  

Dr. Dean dedicated his career to advancing surgical education, research, and patient care. A proud Michigan State University alumnus, he earned his medical degree from Wayne State University before completing his surgical training at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Following service as a surgeon with a MASH unit in Vietnam and leadership roles in Cincinnati, he returned to Michigan State University in 1973 to lead the affiliated surgical residency program at Butterworth Hospital. In 1984, he became Chair of the MSU Department of Surgery, a position he held until his retirement in 2001.  

During his tenure, Dr. Dean helped shape generations of surgeons and played a pivotal role in the growth of surgical education and research at Michigan State University. His work in immunology, transplantation, nutrition, and trauma systems contributed significantly to the advancement of surgical science in Michigan and beyond. Nationally recognized for his contributions to academic surgery, he was a founding member and seventh president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery and was honored with numerous distinguished awards throughout his career.  

Beyond his many professional accomplishments, Dr. Dean will be remembered as a respected mentor, educator, colleague, and leader whose influence continues to be felt throughout the Department of Surgery and the broader surgical community. His legacy lives on through the countless surgeons, residents, students, and faculty members whose careers he helped shape, as well as through the Dr. Richard E. and Christine Dean Endowed Professorship in Immunology and Molecular Biology.  

Our thoughts are with Dr. Dean's family, friends, former colleagues, and all who were fortunate to know him. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of service, excellence, and dedication to Michigan State University and the field of surgery.
