We offer tailored clinical shadowing to students exploring the surgical specialties.
About Our Shadowing Program
The Department of Surgery is pleased to offer shadowing experiences for the College of Human Medicine’s pre-clinical students, as well as pre-physician assistant students, and undergraduates interested in the medical field. To participate, please read the directions below and sign up via the contact form given at the end of this page.
As a pre-physician assistant student (undergraduate), you may only function as an observer. There are also a number of forms that must be completed prior to setting up an experience. Freshman & Sophomores students are limited to one half-day clinic experience with a lunch with a physician assistant. Junior & Senior students are limited to two half-days experiences. You will receive one Operating Room (O.R.) experience and one Clinic experience.
Prior to setting up an experience, students will need to:
- Sign up for shadowing experience via the below contact form.
- Read and sign the student clinical observer agreement.
- Read and sign the confidentiality agreement.
- Complete an on-line OSHA safety measure course and print off the confirmation to return with the application.
- Provide a copy of your immunization record.
- Complete HIPAA quiz which is done at your shadowing orientation.
- Participate in shadowing orientation and scrub session.
We currently do not offer pre-PA shadowing opportunites.

As a CHM 1st and 2nd Year medical student, you may only function as an observer. There are also a number of forms that must be completed prior to setting up an experience. Students are limited to two half-days, either 8:00am-12:00pm or 1:00pm-5:00pm. You receive one OR experience and one Clinic experience.
Prior to setting up an experience, students will need to:
- Sign up for shadowing experience via the below contact form.
- Read and Sign the Sparrow Observer Form with confidentiality agreement.
- Participate in shadowing orientation.
A clerkship staff member will contact all those who have signed up for the Surgery Shadowing experience – 1 week prior to the orientation.
