Michigan State University - College of Human Medicine - Department of Surgery’s courses provide a unique combination of learning how to be an integral part of the surgical team while absorbing an in-depth knowledge of the patient's disease process and correlating basic science with the pathophysiology and treatment of the patient's disease. Students will be introduced to preoperative, operative and post-operative care of patients with elective and emergent – related illness, psychosocial issues and as well as operating room procedures. Students will perform basic procedures under the guide of preceptors while on this rotation. The department oversees the medical student surgical curriculum on CHM’s eight-clinical campuses (Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Midland, SEMich, Traverse City & Upper Peninsula) across the state of Michigan with approximately 200 students per graduation class.
Required core surgical courses (Shared Discovery Curriculum - 641, 642 & 643) are open only to MD students in the College of Human Medicine. The Department of Surgery also offers 22 surgical electives (campus-dependent) in various subspeciality surgical topics including hand surgery, surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, as well as others.
