MSU Hosts 2nd Annual “Hot Topics” in Cancer Symposium, Showcasing Breakthroughs in Oncology

EAST LANSING, MI – The Department of Surgery at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine proudly hosted the 2nd Annual “Hot Topics” in Cancer Symposium on October 2, 2025, at the University Club of MSU. This full-day event brought together leading experts, researchers, and healthcare professionals to discuss the latest advancements in cancer care and treatment.

The symposium featured a robust agenda, with six focused sessions covering critical topics in oncology, including liver, biliary tract, pancreas, esophageal, colorectal, and melanoma/endocrine cancers. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from renowned speakers, participate in interactive panel discussions, and explore innovative solutions presented by sponsors.

  • Keynote Address: Dr. David Kwon delivered an inspiring keynote speech, offering insights into the future of treatment and the importance of translational research in improving patient outcomes through lessons learned treating pancreatic cancer.
  • Expert Presentations: Esteemed speakers such as Dr. Sasha Shingina, Dr. Ralph Francescone, and Dr. Linda Qu shared cutting-edge research and clinical advancements, including liver cancer downstaging, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer, and targeted therapies for biliary tract cancers. Dr. Srinivas Kavuturu, Dr. Maher Ghanem, and Dr. Brooke Spencer provided valuable insights into surgical advancements and techniques for complex multi-organ surgeries.
  • Interactive Panels: Each session concluded with dynamic Q&A discussions, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among attendees.
  • Research Presentations: The event concluded with a series of research presentations, highlighting groundbreaking studies conducted by MSU faculty and collaborators.
